PREVENTIVE HEALTH
For Preventive Health, PCH members come together to serve and increase awareness of major health problems prevalent in our local Los Angeles communities. Chronic issues like hypertension, diabetes, and obesity continue to face our local communities and populations. As a component, Preventive Health sends groups of trained volunteers to run sites that tackle these conditions upstream by offering free blood pressure screenings, BMI measurements, and other educational resources that promote a healthy lifestyle. The community members and service recipients that pass by our sites can take advantage of our free services and interact with volunteers in a way that fosters awareness and engagement in making healthy lifestyle choices on both sides. Typically, PCH sets these sites up at local Filipino supermarkets in Historic Filipinotown and East Hollywood. However, due to the ongoing pandemic, these sites are temporarily paused until it is safe and practical to continue. This has not stopped PCH’s commitment to serving the local LA community through other means, from educational webinars aimed at improving overall health and wellbeing during these times to the continued planning of more creative ways to disseminate information, from updating resources to making accessible, helpful content. Although this year may look a bit different from the past, with more partnerships and collaborations with other service-based organizations, Preventive Health is dedicated to giving volunteers an opportunity to communicate and interact with the local communities that surround us while keeping a focus on the promotion of healthy lifestyles and practices. Blood Pressure Screening
Chronic diseases are one of the most prevalent afflictions in adults in the US, especially for minority groups such as African Americans and Pilipinos. Regular blood pressure screenings are a great way to maintain your health and can detect possible signs of hypertension.
