The highlight of Week 4 was definitely our quarterly health fair - Holy Family Health Fair. Similar to last year, at Holy Family Catholic Church at Artesia, the health fair offered diverse free screenings and informative health education from doctors, nurses, dietitians and other service providers, including dental, glucose/cholesterol, bone density, stroke prevention, Medicare, and mindful diet. There were also student-led evaluations: PCHers directed the BMI/Hypertension screening, while Bruins in Focus, a UCLA pre-optometry club, led the vision screening. Based on their volunteer preferences, PCHers were assigned to a variety of tasks. Translators mostly aided Spanish and Tagalog speakers. Traffic control volunteers directed health care recipients to their desired stations. Floaters were placed wherever assistance was needed. BMI/hypertension table was stationed with trained volunteers to take care recipients' BMI and blood pressure. Registration/ evaluation/ giveaway station processed administrative work. Service provider assistants aided health care providers as seen fit. For instance, volunteers at dental station handed out consent forms for patients to sign, and documented recommended treatment while the dentists and hygienists performed the screening.
PCHers undoubtedly had a rewarding day! It was eye-opening to learn more about the demographics of the community we serve, communicate between different stations precisely, network with the health care providers, and gain invaluable insights to an assorted health fields.
We owe the success of 2017 Holy Family Health Fair to numerous components! The health care providers who offered free screenings to our care recipients, the wonderful church volunteers who prepared appetizing breakfast and lunch for us, all PCH volunteers who signed up for the event, and of course, our Health Fair Co-Directors, Pauline and Chris. Pauline and Chris had diligently organized this health fair for months - we really appreciate your dedication and hard work!
We hope PCHers all had a great time at Holy Family Health Fair and will sign up for another one in winter, our OLP Health Fair - stay tuned!
